Where are all the test case installs?

Postby DLI racing on Sat Nov 14, 2009 7:35 pm

Have wanted to build a turbo project for many years & now finally have the vehicle for it. But like many years ago when I investigated aerocharger there was little 3rd party information about kits fitted, dyno results or any real test results. There is plenty of "wow man I love it & I would never go back" etc. This scenario does not seem to have changed greatly but this forum is a good start to open the gates of knowledge & experience.

While there are many Turbo Kit options for the Suzuki Hayabusa they do not suit a buggy installation. There are also many willing performance tuners prepared to get involved. The turbo scene is greatly focused on 4cyl Jap motors (like it or not in this application they are just about without rival in almost all cases). And in this field Garrett is King with a proven track record as long as your arm, your mates arm & the arms of your next door neighbour. The point is everyone here (Australia) knows Garrett, loves Garrett, call locally support Garrett & me. In addition I can get a GT2860RS "disco potato" for $1350AUD from the guy round the corner.

I know we are not comparing apples with apples but the Garrett VATN turbos are coming, I will be going out on a limb a little by fitting an Aerocharger, my local tuner is also going to be a little less accommodating if I source parts around him.

Never the less I am prepared to have a go. If I can get some sort of consideration/support form Aerocharger I will post pictures of the build, fitting the engine, manufacturing of the turbo manifold, fitting of Turbo & exhaust system. Results from the dyno tuning, in field testing & subsequent race results. As it all evolves. I will post on this forum & my Local “WASA” & “The Edge Products” forums as well.

If we achieve good results on a Turbo Hayabusa motor I believe we can generate a bit of a stir & some interest in a domain owned & operated by Garrett.

In its own lunch box the Hayabusa engine is a bit of a legend & would bring cred to the aerocharger product to have achieved good results with one.

Would love some input from Aerocharger people.

Thanks everyone.

This sounds like a very interesting project. We're looking forward to giving you any help you need to get it done. The forum may be slow but you can always give us a call or email us with any questions or concerns.

As for the Garrett VATN vs. Aerocharger VATN there is one disadvantage that the Garret will almost certainly have: a conventional bearing design. Though I'm sure when they eventually get their variable turbos back into the market they will probably be ball bearing and it will still be flooded. Flooded bearings seriously limit how fast the turbo can be spooled. It's like trying to run underwater. Plus hot engine oil doesn't help counter heat and friction either. Yes, eventually somebody else will build a VATN turbo for the aftermarket. Borg-Warner builds a great variable-vane turbo for the 997 Porsches which I have quite a bit of experience with. In that experience I can tell you that a variable turbo with a conventional bearing design doesn't quite warrant results as significant as you would hope. Yes they spool faster but not instantly. There is way more to spooling instantly than simply adding variable-vanes to a conventional turbo design.

So I'm sure somebody else will built a variable turbo for the aftermarket in the near future however we will still have the advantage of a bearing design that provides superior spooling characteristics.

Hi,

My friends at Bunbury (AU) told me about the Aerochargers and talked me into using one on my current project. They run a Ducati shop, but work on all kinds of bikes. I know there planning on switching to Aerocharges on there drag bikes and are always up for a challenge.

Wayne and Todd Patterson build and race turbocharged Ducati's....

It's been a long time & much has evolved in the buggy development, by end of week i will have a rolling chassis with a fitted engine. The whole chassis design & meterials had to be reviewed to comply with CAMS specs for the offroad racing i wish to compete in. In a nut shell, sell the old start again

Next step is to fabricate the exhaust manafold & locate the turbo in the engine bay. then intercooling, oil & water radiators, fuel system & tanks.

Then the electrics,so much left to do.
